The CONEVAL performed income poverty estimations at national level and in the rural and urban spheres, determining 44.7 million Mexicans lived in conditions of patrimony poverty in 2006 and 14.4 million Mexicans were in situation of food poverty in that same period, according to information by the 2006 National Household Income and Expense Survey elaborated by the INEGI.

Out of the 14.4 million people in food poverty, 5.0 million were located in urban areas and 9.4 million in rural areas, which indicates that two out of three people in situation of food poverty are located in rural areas.

Likewise, the 2006 ENIGH points out that 10 percent of people with low current income concentrate 1.6 percent of total current income, while 10 percent of people with high income in the country represent 39.3 percent of the total current income, which shows the persistence of inequality in Mexico.
