Susan: According to the only blog post I could find about Jessica Valenti making a girl cry, the girl was crying because she thought the Purity Myth would encourage her to be abstinent, and Valenti replied by saying that (I’m quoting the post here) she wasn’t saying it was bad to be chaste, but it just isn’t right to suggest that girls who are chaste are somehow wiser or better off. Which I agree with, actually!
Also Lena Chen argues here that she is not a born again good girl, and according to the Rethinking Virginity Tumblr, the event was “aimed at challenging the heteronormative definitions of virginity and critiquing mainstream discourse about sexual abstinence” and did not stigmatize promiscuity or promote abstinence as the right choice for everyone.
