Older Adult Population Day

One of the great challenges faced by social development policy is social security, especially older adult population care. According to estimations by the CONEVAL, the population 65 years of age and older living in a situation of food poverty reaches 939 thousand people, out of which 57.6 percent does not work, and only 19.5 percent of this population is retired or receives some kind of pension; that is, around 27 thousand people.

 

The population 65 years of age and older that is not in a situation of food poverty amounts to 5.9 million people, out of which 3.9 million do not work, and out of which only 30.5 percent, that is 1.2 million are retired or receive a pension.

 

According to the National Household Income and Expense Survey (ENIGH), in 2006 there were 6.8 million people 65 years of age and older in Mexico, out of which 2.4 million had some kind of occupation, and 4.4 million did not work.

 

Out of those employed elderly adults, only 6.4 percent, that is 157 million people counted with insurance by some kind of institution such as IMSS, ISSSTE, PEMEX, Army, Navy and Universities. Likewise, out of the 65 and older unemployed population, 27 percent, that is 1.2 million people, counted with pension or received some kind of retirement income.
